This is a link to a Python glossary of terms.
ArcPY - is a module Python module inside of ArcGIS that allows the use of Python to control geospatial functions. When used in a script it has all lower case letters. The first line of most geoprocessing Python scripts has the loading of the arcpy module, using import arcpy.
camel case
cursor - this function allows the modification of specific rows of data in a attribute table (database). There are multiple types of cursors: search, insert, update. The descriptive nature of each of the Cursor types provides a functionality understanding of each type.
da - is the data access module.
def - is a definition statement, that you are defining a function.
del - deletes a variable and the contents of the variable, this good to do when the contents of the variable is no longer required for the operation.
Describe is a function in the ArcPy module that returns multiple parameters.
Elif - is a statement in part of an if statement loop. When the If statement is false it will branch to the first elif (else if), if the statement is true it will do the true operation and then exit the if statement loop. If the statement is false it will branch either to another elif statement or an else statement.
Else - is the final statement in an if loop prior to exiting of the loop.
env - is the environment command which is used to define workspace. Once defined once it is used throughout the entire script.
ExportToPDF is an arcpy function in the mapping module to export a project file to a adobe acrobat format, the user can set the resolution of the exported file.
ExportToPNG - is an arcpy function in the mapping module to export a project file to an image PNG format, the user can set the resolution of the export file.
For - is a fundamental statement, it will do an operation a set number of times, which could be number of elements in a list and the exit the loop. Colons are required at the end of the for statement and most IDE programs will automatically indent the code under the for statement. You can nest for loops inside other loops.
GetParameterAsText - has only an index parameter, it is used to get used input information, like in a toolbox.
IDE - is a graphical interface that allows for the editing of scripting language code. It stands for Integrated Development Environment.
IF - is a statement that compares variables and when the statement is true a specified operation is completed when false the script will branch to either an elif or else statement. After execution of the true statement the operation will exit the if statement loop. A colon is used at the end of the if statement to show that it is a loop.
List - is a type of variable that contain similar type of items. Such as a variable named address and contains the street addresses of members of a team. The variable can be either numerical or string. This is sometimes referred to as an array. The first member of the list is numbered as the zero position. square brackets are placed around a list.
ListFeatureClasses - provides a list of all feature classes at a specified location (the environment).
OS - is the operating system module.
parameter
PythonWin - is an IDE editor for Python that runs in the windows operating system.
Python window - usually referring to window inside of ArcGIS that allows for the writing of Python scripts inside of ArcGIS.
return - is a statement which will cause the value to be displayed on a map, used in the labeling property window.
script tool
Variable - is a placeholder for information that may be textual (string) or numeric. The name of a variable is case sensitive. Variable names should be descriptive of what the variable represents. A string variable is enclosed between quotation marks.
While - similar to the for command. This command requires a counter that must be incremented. The incrementation of the counter is normally by would but could be by any amount. The while statement would run has long a true function is received from the counter, once it is false the process would be complete and the program flow would proceed outside of the loop.
With - is used to insure that all locks have been removed from a dataset. A dataset maybe locked when it is used in an operation and if the locks are not removed it potentially will be non-functional or not editable.
